I’ve been using Google AppEngine since it was realized. It’s been useful from time to time.
On of the main reasons I wanted to used AppEngine (besides that I love using Python) was the scalability and that the issue was taken out of the equation (and before November 2011it was relatively cheep). Factors that all pointed to the fact that AppEngine was great for startups.
The where drawbacks with the platform, it was limited on which libraries you where allowed to use, you couldn’t do joins in the database and you needed to learn new ways to work around these limitation which wasn’t a problem because it was something you would have to consider anyway if you wanted to scale. So for me that is a geek I found this exciting to work with.
Well, I have gained another perspective. With the Lean Startup movement the speed of getting a idea to the market and test it has become more important. And as I find myself fighting with with limitations before I’m even launched I have realized that this isn’t the way forward for my projects. Well, I am myself part to blame, I have a background in building tools (CMS and web frameworks) and also often end-up focusing on the wrong tasks.
Well I need to change and that means I need easier tools. A short search on Python frameworks gives a clear indication that Django is the most popular framework ( by a factor of above 100). And I need to start using a SQL-based server, at least for early development.
If my projects end up needing to scale, that will be a luxury problem and I will embrace that with enthusiasm. But for now I need to move quickly and get things released.
The recent years of development in product endorsements spearheaded by Ashton Kutcher where celebrities rather invest in company then get paid for doing endorsements and then endorse it for free made me think about bands (music).
To start a band is like a startup, it actually a Lean Startup too and I guess it has always been. The record companies are the VC, but they also do a lot of other things like marketing and distribution deals. With the internet that’s all nil but the VC part. And going Lean would render the need for VC funding nil too.
Is there any Lean Bands out there that have made all the way without signing with a record company?
Are there any record companies out there that act as pure VCs?
Is there any angel for bands?
If not, why?

Nu är Social Games nytt och populärt, så då är alla spel som gör något nytt och annorlunda “social games”.
Det funkar inte så. Dessutom är gamers sociala till att börja med och dom gör alla spel till sociala aktiviteter.
Mind Craft är ett lysande exempel där Notch (Marcus Persson) genom att bygga ett spel som uppmuntrar skapande fått enorm word of mouth, framförallt på YouTube. Det är inte “by design” utan snarare att Marcus själv är sin målgrupp och gör något som ger resonans hos sina användare.
Social Game är när man bygger in funktioner i spelet som antingen driver game play genom social interaction (som Wow) eller driver marknadsföringen av spelet (som Farmville).
Bara för att ett spel har ett starkt och engagerat social network (community som det hette för) är det inte automatiskt ett “social game”. Inte heller om ett spel har multiplayer funktion är det nödvändigtvis ett “social game”, spelet kan stödja skapande av community genom chatar och andra kommunikationsverktyg, men för att vara social måste det vara en del av spelet.
Co-op är inte heller social även om det börjar närma sig, men om co-op bara är en temporär koalition mellan spelare är det inte social.
Multiplayer rollspel (sk mmorpg) är dock social även om personerna är fiktiva, men för mig spelar det ingen roll. Poängen är att man tar sig fram i spelet genom att agera social och det är det avgörande.
Zynga med sitt flagskepp Farmwille är näste tvärt om, om är först sociala sen spel. Faktum är att Zyngas spel inte är mycket till spel alls, men det vägs upp av det sociala som manar användaren att spela spelet för att inte störa sina (äkta) sociala relationer. Farmwille är egentligen lite “ont” på det sättet att det utnyttjar våran mänskliga sociala läggning för att få oss lojala till spelet. Farmwille har ju också blivit synonymt med social gaming kanske för att det har en bredare målgrupp än till exempel föregångaren Mafiawars.

Here’s the iPhone App I’ve been working on in May
It’s an application for every one that loves jumping and getting a good exercise. The premis is that you can make a series of jumps, the app track how high you jump on each individual jump and how long you rest on the ground in between jumps.
I’ve made this for a client of our’s Peter Häggström who is a retired olympic athlete. Check out the promo video with the world record holder Kajsa Bergquist.
1. How can I use the app?
There are three major work out groups that are sui ted for the ”High Jump Champion”:
- Sports where jum ping is a part of the game. For example bas ket ball, vol ley ball, soc cer, foot ball, high jump, long jump, pole vault etc.
- Sports that need a lot of explo sive muscle fib res. For example sprin ting, speed ska ting and alpine skiing.
- Sports of endu rance. Try to jump as high as pos sible for a longer period of time.
2. How do I jump?
Hold the iphone to your chest as seen on the picture to the right. It’s impor tant that the iphone is poin ted straight up. Push the start but ton and bend your knees and jump. Hold your hand still while jumping.
3. Why does it regis ter the time on the ground?
The time on the ground between the jumps is cru cial when impro ving your ver ti cal capa city. Short ground time and high jumps is opti mal trai ning for explo si ve ness and ver ti cal jump training.
4. Where can I find the mea su re ments of my jumps and ground time?
Scroll between your jumps and click on the bar to find your height and ground time.
5. It feels like I don’t get accu rate results. What can I be doing wrong?
It is impor tant that you don’t bend your knees too much as you hit the ground. It is also impor tant that you hold your hand still as you are jum ping. Try not touching the iphone to your chest while you are jumping.
6. How many jumps can I make?
You can make as many jumps as you like, but if you jump low and fast the appli ca tion might have pro b lems to regis ter all your jumps.
